Glide through one of America's most pristine river swamps aboard a covered boat with Cajun Encounters — the #1 rated swamp tour company in New Orleans. Our expert captains have spent their lives on these waters, guiding guests through ancient bald cypress forests, past sunbathing American alligators, and into the heart of the Louisiana bayou.
Cajun Encounters offers two swamp tour options: the Original Swamp Tour ($39.99, up to 22 guests) and the VIP Small-Boat Tour ($99.99, only 10–12 guests).
BEST FOR FAMILIES: Original Swamp Tour — kids of all ages welcome, spacious covered boat, and our captains love engaging young explorers.
BEST FOR COUPLES & PHOTOGRAPHY: VIP Tour — smaller boats mean closer wildlife encounters and less crowded sight lines for that perfect shot.
BEST FOR GROUPS & CELEBRATIONS: VIP Private Tour — book the entire boat for your bachelor/bachelorette party, birthday, or corporate outing.
BEST FOR BUDGET TRAVELERS: Original Swamp Tour — the same legendary Honey Island Swamp, expert captains, and covered boats at the best value in New Orleans swamp tourism.

The Honey Island Swamp is a 70,000-acre wetland paradise located along the Pearl River in Slidell, Louisiana — just 45 minutes from the French Quarter. Named one of the most pristine river swamps in the United States, it is home to more than 250 species of birds, the American alligator, Louisiana black bear, wild boar, white-tailed deer, and the elusive bobcat.
The swamp's towering bald cypress trees — some over 500 years old — rise from the dark, tannin-stained waters like ancient sentinels, their branches draped in cascading curtains of Spanish moss. In the deeper channels, water hyacinths carpet the surface in summer, creating a living mosaic of green and purple that shelters fish, turtles, and juvenile alligators.
Honey Island gets its name from the honeybees that once swarmed a small island in the swamp's interior. Today, the area is adjacent to the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area and remains one of the least-commercially-developed swamps in Louisiana — which is exactly what makes it extraordinary for visitors.
Our boats launch from the dock at 55345 US-90, Slidell, Louisiana 70461 — the same launch point used by local fishermen and wildlife researchers for generations.

(Alligator mississippiensis)
The undisputed stars of every swamp tour. Honey Island is home to a healthy population ranging from foot-long juveniles to 12-foot adults. On warm days, expect to see 10–20+ alligators. Peak sighting season: March through October.

Home to 250+ species including great blue herons, snowy egrets, ospreys, red-shouldered hawks, belted kingfishers, and bald eagles. The Pearl River basin is a birder's paradise year-round.

The swamp's resident raccoons have become accustomed to our boats. Watch for them peering down from cypress knees — our captains know them by name.

Feral hogs have thrived in Louisiana's swamplands for centuries. Spot them rooting along muddy banks or swimming across channels. VIP boats get closer.

Red-eared sliders bask on every available log. Harmless water snakes weave through the hyacinths. In spring, watch for river otters along the banks.

Deep in the Honey Island Swamp stands a hollow bald cypress tree with a secret: during Prohibition (1920–1933), local bootleggers used its natural hollow to hide barrels of illegal whiskey from federal revenue agents. Who would search for contraband in the middle of an impenetrable swamp?
The Whiskey Tree became so legendary that when Disney's creative team visited Honey Island while researching locations for The Princess and the Frog (2009), the tree was one of their key inspirations for the film's bayou scenes. The movie's depiction of Louisiana's swamp landscape drew directly from the ancient cypress corridors and moss-draped channels our tours navigate daily.
Today, the Whiskey Tree remains a highlight of every Cajun Encounters swamp tour — a living piece of Louisiana's colorful history, standing in the same waters where bootleggers once hid from the law over a century ago.
The best months for alligator sightings are March through October, but every season offers unique swamp wildlife.

Spring brings the swamp to life. Alligators emerge from winter dormancy in early March, and by April, females begin nesting. This is the best time to spot baby alligators riding on their mothers' backs. Migratory warblers and shorebirds flood the Pearl River basin, and wildflowers bloom along the banks. Water levels are typically moderate, providing excellent boat access to narrower channels.

“Booked the New Orleans Swamp Tour as a first time visitor from Los Angeles and it was the highlight of my trip! Our driver Derek and boat captain Dustin were both super knowledgeable and made the experience super engaging and fun 😁🐊 We saw alligators, raccoons, spiders, birds and more! Learned about the ecosystem as a whole, and how it inspired the bayou from the Princess and the Frog. Loved it so much, and I highly recommend!!!!!”

“I had an amazing time on the New Orleans Swamp Tour with Derek (bus) and Tony S.(captain). I was a little reluctant to go on the swamp tour initially but they both made my daughter and I feel at ease and completely safe. They were so knowledgeable and informative about Louisiana’s history, swamps, food and wild life. I learned so much and recommend this tour to everyone. They were so friendly, funny, informative and engaging. The tour is worth the money and then some. You really see wildlife throughout the entire ride. This was really an enjoyable experience and I’m glad we did this tour. I would do it every time we come to NOLA which pretty frequently.”

“I picked this company based on reviews, and now I can add mine. This was a great tour. I did the VIP tour with Emmet and it was worth every penny. I imagined the swamp would be cool, but I didn’t imagine how beautiful it would be. Emmet was funny and extremely knowledgeable about the whole ecosystem. His love for the swamp came through. We saw both young alligators and adult ones along with other animals, birds, and cool plants. I’m so glad I went! Our bus driver Trevon the Extraordinary (not sure of exact name) was also great and told us a lot of things I didn’t know about on our way there and back. I highly recommend taking the tours offered by Cajun Encounters.”

March through October is peak wildlife season — warmer weather means more alligator sightings. However, we operate year-round and every season offers something unique: fall foliage, winter bird migrations, and spring wildflowers.
Almost certainly. On warm days (March–October), our captains routinely spot 10–20+ alligators per tour. In cooler months, sightings depend on sunny, warm days when alligators bask. You'll also see raccoons, wild boar, turtles, herons, and more regardless of season.
Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing. We recommend closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, and a hat. In summer, light layers. In winter, a jacket — it's cooler on the water. Our boats are covered, providing shade and rain protection.
No. We operate covered flat-bottom boats — larger boats on our Original tour and smaller boats on our VIP tour. Unlike airboats, our vessels are quiet (allowing you to hear your captain's narration and wildlife sounds), covered (protecting from sun and rain), and designed for wildlife viewing rather than speed. Guests consistently tell us they prefer the immersive experience of a quiet boat over an airboat's noise.
